You’ve <\/span>all received spam on your personal email address,<\/b> and you all know how annoying it could be. When <\/span>unwanted messages flood your business inbox<\/b>, however, the consequences span far beyond putting you in a bit of a mood for a few minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malware and phishing attacks could have devastating consequences for online projects, and even though you may think that you <\/span>can’t be fooled by online scams<\/b>, a large number of unwanted messages could still result in missed legitimate communication.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spam is a serious problem that shouldn’t be underestimated. To help our customers filter out their incoming communication a bit better, we integrated<\/span> SpamAssassin into <\/b>SPanel<\/b><\/a>, the management system that comes as a part of our <\/span>managed cloud VPS<\/b><\/a> hosting solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is SpamAssassin?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

SpamAssassin <\/b>(<\/span>or Apache SpamAssassin as it’s been known since 2004<\/span><\/i>) has been around for close to two decades now, and it’s widely considered to be one of the <\/span>most reliable spam filtering systems available today<\/b>. It analyzes every single incoming email and takes into consideration a number of <\/span>different factors to determine<\/b> whether it’s likely to be spam or not.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SpamAssassin first checks whether the<\/span> sender or the mail server are present<\/b> in one of the publicly-available spam block lists. It also looks for<\/span> certain aspects related to the formatting and language of the message <\/b>that are usually associated with unsolicited emails (<\/span>e.g., excessive use of all-caps text and grammatical mistakes<\/span><\/i>). All these factors contribute to the message’s SpamAssassin score. The higher the score, the more suspicious the email is.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure that no legitimate communication is lost, SpamAssassin doesn’t automatically delete incoming emails from your<\/span> Scala Hosting VPS account<\/b>. Instead, it adds <\/span>[SPAM] <\/b>to the subject. That way, you can either manually sort through all the messages while easily spotting the suspicious ones, or you can <\/span>configure your email client<\/b> to automatically send them to the <\/span>Junk folder<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enabling SpamAssassin in SPanel<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

SpamAssassin<\/b> is separately configured for every single SPanel user account. Here’s how to enable it:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Log into SPanel’s User Interface.<\/strong><\/span>
    The default login URL is https:\/\/yourdomain.com\/spanel<\/em> (make sure you swap yourdomain.com for your actual domain).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open the SpamAssassin feature and check its status.<\/strong>
      The SpamAssassin feature is controlled via a tool available in the Email <\/strong>section on the homepage of SPanel’s User Interface. After you open if, you will be able to see if SpamAssassin is enabled or not.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      1. Click Enable SpamAssassin and confirm the changes.<\/strong>
        After you click the button that enables the feature, SPanel will ask you to confirm the changes. This completes the process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
