To understand how it works, <\/span><b>you need to know how the entire <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scalahosting.com\/kb\/what-is-dns\/\"><b>DNS<\/b><\/a><b> system functions.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Your domain has a DNS zone file <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created and stored by your hosting provider. When users try to access your website, their browsers query the DNS zone file for the IP of the server hosting the content. More specifically, it looks for the <\/span><b>domain&#8217;s A record.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, when they<\/span><b> send an email to an inbox associated with your domain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mail transfer agent looks through the DNS zone file to find out where it needs to deliver your email. This information is available in the <\/span><b>MX record<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you<\/span><b> add your domain to your ScalaHosting account<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your control panel will automatically create a DNS zone file. By default, the zone file contains an A record and an MX record telling user&#8217;s browsers and email clients that your <\/span><b>emails and website are all hosted on your ScalaHosting account&#8217;s server.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><b>editing the existing MX record <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or adding a new one, you can have a different server <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or servers) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handling your emails. The setting is applicable if you have multiple MX records.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Value<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The field where you need to enter<\/span><b> the mail server&#8217;s hostname<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More information about it should be available at the server&#8217;s provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also<\/span><b> add a new MX record<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the form situated above the list of existing ones.
