Subdomains<\/b><\/a> allow you to set up easily <\/span>accessible sections of your website.<\/b> By establishing your company blog under blog.example.com and putting your online shop under shop.example.com, you can <\/span>diversify your content and make your website easier to navigate<\/b> around. Let’s see how a subdomain works and how you can create one on your ScalaHosting account.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How subdomains work<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every domain that points to your account has a <\/span>document root folder.<\/b> When you type your site’s domain into your browser’s address bar, the web server fetches the homepage from the document root and serves it back to you.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A subdomain works in a pretty much identical fashion. Once again, you have a<\/span> document root that hosts the content<\/b> you see when you navigate to the subdomain. Inside it, you can have a fresh <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress installation<\/b><\/a> or a messaging board where your visitors discuss topics and share opinions. The content under the subdomain exists pretty much <\/span>independently from the primary site<\/b>. However, the subdomain itself is not independent of the main domain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the <\/span>main domain expires,<\/b> all your subdomains become unavailable. Similarly, if you point your domain to a different account, your subdomains will stop working unless you<\/span> recreate them on the new server.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating subdomains on your ScalaHosting account<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both <\/span>cPanel<\/b><\/a> and <\/span>SPanel<\/b><\/a> let you create as many subdomains as you want. The process is simple and takes no more than a couple of minutes. Here are the steps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

cPanel<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For cPanel follow these steps :<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Log into cPanel<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    cPanel’s default login URL is <\/span>https:\/\/domain.com:2083<\/span>, where <\/span>domain.com<\/span><\/i> is <\/span>replaced by your actual domain name.<\/b> If the domain isn’t pointing to your hosting account, you can also use the server’s IP, though you need to bear in mind that the<\/span> subdomains won’t work unless you point the domain correctly.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Go to Subdomains<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The subdomains section is <\/span>accessible via a button in the Domains pane<\/b> on cPanel’s homepage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

        The form that appears asks you to<\/span> enter your subdomain<\/b> (the part before .domain.com<\/span><\/i>), pick the relevant domain from the drop-down menu, and specify a document root. By default, subdomains created with cPanel <\/span>point to folders located inside the public_html directory.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n

        • Set up the subdomain and start using it<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          After you click <\/span>Create<\/b>, cPanel will automatically create the subdomain’s document root folder<\/span> (if you haven’t picked an existing one)<\/span><\/i> and will set up the subdomain for you. Creating a subdomain doesn’t modify your <\/span>domain’s DNS settings<\/b>, so there’s no propagation period.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          SPanel<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          For SPanel follow these steps :<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Log into SPanel’s User Interface<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            SPanel’s default login URL is <\/span>https:\/\/yourdomain.com\/spanel<\/span>. Once again, you can use your <\/span>server’s IP<\/b> if your domain isn’t pointed to the correct hosting account. Be sure to use the login credentials for the relevant <\/span>SPanel user account.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Go to Subdomains<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              SPanel’s tool for <\/span>managing subdomains <\/b>is available on the User Interface’s homepage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

              • Pick a subdomain and specify a document root folder<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                Just like cPanel, SPanel asks you to enter the new subdomain in the first field,<\/span> choose the main domain from the drop-down menu<\/b>, and specify a document root folder. Unlike cPanel, SPanel doesn’t put the subdomain’s document root <\/span>inside the public_html folder.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n
