Scala Hosting – Security made better

Scala Hosting - Security made better

The number of attacks on the internet are increasing daily. As a result, more and more web sites are getting hacked and used for various abuse related actions. Those include uploading phishing web sites, sending SPAM, flooding networks, cracking passwords and others. The problem is most of the clients are not tech savvy and they don’t know how to secure their accounts and keep them secure all the time. In that way the attacks happening all the time on the internet will not be able to affect them. A compromised account on the server can cause many problems. First of all, it can SPAM, upload phishing web sites to steal credit cards but it may also be used to compromise other accounts on the server which are not secure. The most recent way used by hackers is creating symlinks to the configuration files of other clients which contain their login information for MySQL. Those details include the database name and the mysql username and password. They can be used to compromise that account. We have an article in our knowledge base about security of web sites which can be accessed at https://www.scalahosting.com/clients/knowledgebase/1/My-account-has-been-compromised-How-do-I-fix-it.html however that article didn’t make our clients to secure all the web sites they host. That is why we decided to do something from our end which would make our clients’ web sites more secure. We implemented a system on all our servers which would find the configuration files of the web sites and change their permissions to 600. That will make those web sites secure and they will not be compromised in case of a local symlink attack which happens very often these days and is widely used. We monitored how the system works and it secured many thousands of web sites across all our servers. We were amazed to see how many insecure web sites are hosted on our servers and we are glad we are able to make them more secure.

Scala Hosting live chat support is now better

We always listen to what our clients say and we do our best to match their needs. We got multiple requests to develop a module which would allow clients to authenticate as customers of Scala Hosting on the live chat so that they don’t have to open a ticket in case they need something to be done quickly over the live chat. We have implemented a module which would allow us to know if the person who opened a live chat is actually a customer or not so that if any account changes are requested we can complete them during the live chat session instead of asking the customer to open a ticket. We think our customers will appreciate that feature as it will be really useful and it will save their time.

Your data is safe at Scala Hosting

Your data is safe at Scala Hosting

One of the things which make us different from the other web hosting providers nowadays is backups. We checked what backup options other hosting providers in the industry provide to their clients and we were shocked to see that almost all of them charge extra for backups and they have either daily or weekly backups but not both of them. They charge from $10 to $15 per restore. At Scala Hosting, we give our clients access to their backups so that they can access and restore the data at any time of the day or night. On top of that, we provide it for free. Our shared hosting and power reseller hosting plans include daily, weekly and even monthly backups for free. Our best reseller hosting and VPS hosting plans include daily and weekly backups for free. Dedicated servers can have custom backups. For example, you can decide to have backups for the last 1, 3, 7, 60 or even 90 days. We can perform the backups as per your needs for your dedicated server. We can also do backups hourly. All our backups are stored on remote backup servers with RAID for maximum redundancy and reliability. That allows us to keep your data secure no matter what happens with the server you are using. Our servers are also secured well to avoid severe failures and eventual data loss. All our servers have RAID cards and 4 drives configured to work in RAID10. RAID10 increases the read/write operations so that the web sites of our clients load instantly and also it protects the clients from data loss. RAID10 allows up to 2 hard drives to fail at the same time before the server goes down. All servers are hot-swap which lets us replace failed hard drives without rebooting the server and causing downtime. We know uptime is the most important thing for every web site and that is why we invest a lot of money to have the latest and best hardware which enables us to offer a top quality service.
